fish plate

This meal felt like a marathon.  Jetlagged, disoriented and in the throws of a typhoon, we arrived at this restaurant after dark.  It was in the middle of a rice paddy in northern Taiwan, but I’ve misplaced the business card with its name and exact address.  No matter- the next day it was all but destroyed by the heavy wind and rain.  I don’t know if they’ve been able to reopen yet, or if they will.

They were anticipating us, a group of 9.  We were treated to the famous Taiwanese family style menu, with course after course arriving to the table.  To say that the cooks were disappointed in us is an understatement.  We could hardly eat past the 4th course.

This platter in particular was spectacular looking, spilling out over the edges bountifully with sashimi and oysters and salads, and that gaping fish which made a later appearance as course number 8 (or was it 9?).  What I truly wish I could show you is a 4 second video I took of one of the desserts: a jiggling (with surprisingly little agitation) gelatinous blob of grass jelly bathed in white coconut milk topped with colored sprinkles.   If I can figure out how to upload it, you’ll be glad.
